A Clinical Study on the Effect of Cefnam (Cefuzonam Sodium, L-105) for Neurosurgical Infection

Abstract
Cefnam¢ç?(Cefuzonam Sodium, L-105), a new broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent, was administered to. 20 infected patients including meningitis, severely contaminated CCDF, Discitis. Cystitis and. Pneumonia from Jan. 1991 to Jun 1991.
Most patients received 2gm doses of cefnam daily, an exception was 4.0 gm in a case of severe meningitis, for at least 4 days. Cefnam and other antibiotics. mainly aminoglycoside derivatives, were administered in combination in 15 cases but the only cefnam was administered in the other 5 cases.
The study results could be summarized as follows
1) The overall clinical response rate was 90% (18 of 20 patients).
2) The bacteriologic response rate was 90% (9 of 10 microorganism changed to negative by cefnam injection)
3) Cefnam was especially effective for meningitis due to Staphylococcus aureus and discitis.
4) There was no specific side reaction except skin rash in one case which was easily controlled with antihistamine .
5) There was no abnormally elevated laboratory findings related to cefnam injection. So. we could say that cefnam was an effective and safe antibiotic in neurosurgical area
